Kerry Martin's profile

Cameron and the Girls (middle grade/YA novel)

In this novel about a young boy suffers from schizophreniform disorder (he hears voices). The story follows him as he goes off his medication because he likes the voices, particularly the voice of The Girl, he almost prefers her to the real girl who comes into his life.

We were going to use stock photography, but the editor wanted a bold, graphic treatement that would convey the manic nature of the text. I've been wanting to work with the illustrator Zachariah OHora for years, his name poped into my head after meeting with the editor. He was so great to work with, even when we asked him to make the kids more mature than they were originally (the yellow girl had pigtails . . .). I think this came out even more captivating than we had hoped, complete with Zach's hand lettering on the title type.
